At Dawn

“Have thou found a true soul?”
The whirlwind asked.
“Have thou found the soul and grinded it to ashes?
Have thy chortled as it flailed and danced as it fell?
Have thy seen its palid visage, heard its last scream, felt its last breath?
For if thou hast not, my son,
Thou hast not lived.
Thou hast not felt the beauty of life, or the malice of it.
Thou hast not owned a true soul.
For thou must remember, my son:
The dawn of life does not come easy.”
