Running Shoes

I wish you’d stop.

You’re stepping on my shoes again

and look -

I bought them yesterday,

saturday,

turquoise skies and yellow sun;

I heard a songbird telling me,

“Run, girl, run.”

You need to run.

Can’t breathe, I

can’t take another step.

and yes, this is me;

just another pebble in the stream.

So I roll and roll and roll,

you don’t need much to roll.

I woke up at the beach

mended myself stitch by stitch

Baby, I was alone.

I feel like a rag.

Old, tattered, full of droop and sag.

Beat it as you will; I’m only gray

All your oceans of bleach will do no good

You say you’ll fix me but

how,

I wonder?

I wish you’d stop, you’re

worse than the rest.

Have you ever set your bones?

Fingers,

here, there, and there -

push, ow, ow, now you’re beautiful.

Hold me like no one’s ever done before

Be my crutch,

I’ll take your hand.

We’ve race the world,

but not each other.
